Adopt a Career-Change Dog

While all dogs at JLAD begin their lives with the intention of becoming a service dog, some dogs decide in the midst of their training that they are ready to pursue another career. Even though service work isn’t the career for them, being a perfectly loving pet dog is, and they make wonderful family dogs. A majority of dogs are dismissed between 8-18 months of age, although we occasionally have retired service dogs ready to live out their golden years with a forever family. Our organization trains Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and a cross of the two, both male and female.

Career change dogs are dismissed from service work for a variety of reasons, typically behavioral in nature, and occasionally medical issues.

The cost of adoption varies, starting at $1,500, depending on the reason for dismissal, as well as the level of training the dog has achieved. Please note, payment for the dog is due at the time of adoption.
Included in your adoption fee is:

  • All medical care, as appropriate for age
    • Spay or neuter
    • Vaccinations
    • Flea and heartworm prevention
    • Microchip
  • Professional training throughout the dog’s time spent with JLAD (skills of each dog will vary based on dog’s age, most have accomplished basic obedience)

Our career change dogs are full of love, and make for wonderful family pet dogs. The decision of where a dog will be adopted out to will be based on suitability, not who is first on the list. If you have any questions about the process or would like to request an application, contact us by calling 503-551-4572 or use our contact form.  paw print
